National workshops

In March 2022 we launched our first series of online national workshops! These were held on Zoom and open to all group volunteers with great success.

The purpose of these workshops are to provide group volunteers information on specific topics to help them in running their groups. Group volunteers can connect with each other share experiences and learn ideas they can try in the group.

Season with Sense

Season with Sense is a public health campaign with the aim of driving down consumer sodium intake.

Our first workshop was held over two days, during Salt Awareness Week in March 2022. The sessions provided practical information and education around salt. LoSalt® provided takeaway resources you can use with your own groups to encourage healthier eating. You can order a copy of these resources by emailing [email protected]

Watch the videos below.

In the first session hear from Caroline Klinge from LoSalt®* a driving force behind the public awareness campaign Season with Sense, as well as well-known TV Doctor and LoSalt advisor, Dr Sarah Jarvis.

Stroke survivor Chris King shares his inspirational story and top tips on healthy eating which you can share at your group. Some of you will know Chris who runs a cooking stroke support group which is part of the Stroke Group Network.

Our second session, on this topic was a live cook-a-long with Sally Bee.

Sally is a TV personality presenter, writer, and chef, featuring on ITV. As a 5 times heart attack survivor, Sally is a motivational speaker in health and wellbeing, as well as an author of six bestselling cookbooks. Sally is passionate about empowering everyone to live their best lives, no matter what challenges they face.

Learning about Physical Activity in groups

Our next workshop was held in July 2022 and covered Learning about Physical Activity in Support Groups. It provided volunteers with practical tips on how to promote moving more and set up physical activity sessions in support groups.

At the session, Sophie Field, our Communities Lead, gives some really useful tips on how to encourage your members to move more and runs through our processes on physical activity.

Ben Anthony from Woking Strokeability told us how his group set up gym sessions and aqua aerobics (or splashing as he calls it!) and gave great advice to other groups.

Further information about physical activities can be found here on the Stroke Association intranet.  If you have any problems getting onto the intranet contact [email protected].
